Large Cherry Tankard with brass hoops
Cherry is found all over the Northern hemisphere, but usually only in small numbers. It is quite a difficult wood to make tankards from, because when it's freshly sawn the colour varies greatly, making it difficult to match the staves, and gum pockets (little red streaks) are common. At first, Cherry is usually a pale red-brown, sometimes even pink, colour but on exposure to light it rapidly darkens to a much more pleasing golden-red colour. Most tankards will have wood with some of the red streaks (gum pockets) as this is a natural feature of Cherry wood.
